Broken Arrow Pickleball Love Story: A 92-year-old man from Broken Arrow and his girlfriend are proving that it is never too late to try something new. Jack Ensminger and Jill Hoilien share a passion for pickleball, playing together almost every day. Their love for the sport keeps them active and inspires others.
A Late Start in Sports
Jack Ensminger did not grow up playing sports. “I grew up on a farm and we didn’t have time for sports at all. I never played anything until I retired. That was 38 years ago, so I’ve had a good time since then,” he said.
He discovered pickleball through a friend and quickly became hooked. “I had a friend that I played softball with, and he mentioned it and I came and hooked on real quick. This was kind of the birthplace of pickleball in Oklahoma, on this court. Now look, everywhere you see, pickleball players everywhere,” said Jack.
Meeting Jill Through Pickleball
Like many players, Jack needed a partner. “We would have trouble getting a fourth, and there was three of us waiting for someone to come in and Jill Hoilien showed up, her first day for pickleball, and made the four,” Jack said.
For Jill, the first day was challenging but exciting. “I didn’t know anything. The scoring is kinda complicated if you haven’t ever done it. But it didn’t matter, I could tell I was gonna love the sport. They could keep the score, I just played,” she said.
Staying Young Through the Game
Now, years later, Jack and Jill play nearly every day. Jack, soon to turn 93, enjoys competing against younger players. He also values the social side of the game. “Just enjoy because as you can see, it’s so social and everybody intermingles, new friendship. It’s just a lot of fun,” he said.
The couple has won many awards in sports, and Jack recently competed in track and field events. They credit pickleball with keeping them both physically and mentally young.
Encouraging Others to Join
Jack and Jill encourage people of all ages to give the sport a try. “The equipment is not a big investment and anybody can pick up a paddle and play, and find out if they are hooked. You know pretty quickly if it’s for you,” said Jill.
They play at different locations across Green Country, including the Central Park Community Center in Broken Arrow, where pickleball is offered several days a week.
Looking Ahead
Their story shows how pickleball is more than a sport. It creates friendships, keeps people healthy, and brings joy to players of all ages. Jack and Jill’s journey is an example of how trying something new later in life can lead to lasting happiness.
