Doane Students Flock to Thursday Pickleball & Cornhole Night—Could This Be Campus’ New Favorite Tradition?

Doane University Pickleball Cornhole Night: The fraternity Tau Sigma Zeta hosted a Pickleball & Cornhole event for Doane University students on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 6:45 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. The goal was to give students a fun activity and something to look forward to on Thursdays.

Event Details and Participation

Junior Roberto Cordova said, “The goal for the night was to simply give the wonderful students of Doane something to enjoy and another thing to look forward to on Thursdays!” The event included pickleball, cornhole, spikeball, and even some basketball.

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. It is played on a small court with a low net, using solid paddles. The perforated plastic ball can be played in singles or doubles.

Cornhole is a lawn game with angled boards and bean bags filled with corn kernels. Players score three points if a bag goes through the hole or one point if it lands on the board. Games continue until a player reaches 21 points.

A Successful Turnout

The event drew more participants than expected. Roberto Cordova said, “I think at peak business, we had around 32 people there because three cornhole boards were filled, two pickleball courts were filled, we had two spikeball nets being used and even some people playing basketball.” The Student Programming Board provided extra boards to accommodate the larger crowd.

Continuing Thursday Fun

Tau Sigma Zeta plans to host more Thursday events in the future. Roberto Cordova added, “We also want to thank everyone who came or talked about the event because it was amazing for us to host.”

These activities give students a mix of energetic and relaxed games, appealing to all ages and abilities, while fostering community and fun on campus.
