The Fayette County Family YMCA will start a youth pickleball program this fall for students in third through eighth grades. The program runs from October 27 through November 24, with registration open from September 20 through October 20, 2025. Practices will be held at the YMCA on Mondays.
Program Schedule and Details
Younger students in grades 3-5 will practice at 5:30 p.m., while grades 6-8 will practice at 6:30 p.m. The program introduces children to pickleball, a fast-growing sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, played with paddles and a perforated plastic ball on a smaller court.
Purpose and Benefits
Amber Whenham, sports coordinator at the Fayette County Family YMCA, said,
“We are thrilled to introduce youth pickleball to our community. This is such an engaging sport that kids can pick up quickly and enjoy. It’s another way the Y can provide opportunities for youth to stay active, learn new skills, and be part of a team.”
The program aligns with the YMCA’s mission to create activities that help young people discover their potential while staying active and building teamwork skills.
Community Impact
The youth pickleball program offers local children a chance to learn a new sport, improve fitness, and participate in a team environment. By introducing pickleball at a young age, the YMCA hopes to foster long-term interest in physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
