San Francisco Pickleball Court Expansion: San Francisco is exploring new locations for pickleball courts to meet growing demand for the sport. Officials aim to add courts without upsetting neighbors who are concerned about noise. The city’s Recreation and Parks Department is reviewing potential sites and surveying residents to guide future decisions.
Potential Court Locations
One proposed site is a small, overgrown area at Mosconi Park in the Marina. The space used to be a putting green next to golf driving nets and tennis courts. Neighborhood resident Elliot Robbins supports the idea. He said,
“I would prefer if they were going to expand pickleball over thee that I would love to get rid of the ones that are on the tennis courts, because there have definitely been times here when it’s pickleball designated time and there’s only tennis players.”
Existing tennis courts at Mosconi Park are split into multiple pickleball courts starting at 3 p.m. on most weekdays to accommodate the growing number of players.
City Efforts and Community Feedback
The Recreation and Parks Department is building new courts and managing existing tennis and volleyball courts to balance the needs of all players. A recent survey by the city’s Tennis and Pickleball Planning Roundtable presented three top sites and six additional locations to the Rec and Parks Commission last week. One proposed multi-use court is at Panhandle Park in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.
Opinions among Panhandle Park regulars are mixed. Adam Escolta, who lives across the street, said,
“Yeah, I’d like to know more. I actually don’t really know what a pickleball pickleball court looks like, so. And I and I’ve never lived near one, so it’s possible the noise would be an issue and I just don’t know.”
Other residents are concerned about the distinct “plink, plink, plink” sound from pickleball.
Next Steps
City officials emphasize these plans are preliminary. A Recreation and Parks Department spokesperson said the proposals depend on future funding, which could include a public-private partnership. Officials will continue to gather input and study the impact before moving forward.
