Rochelle Park Pickleball Courts Opening: The City of Roanoke Rapids and the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau celebrated the opening of new pickleball courts at Rochelle Park on September 25th with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The courts were funded by the city’s share of occupancy tax dollars and replace an old tennis court from the 1970s.
Background and Funding
The courts were built to provide more recreational options and attract visitors. Lori Medlin, president and CEO of the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said,
“We always try to think of things that enhance the quality of life in the community and bring visitors in.”
She added that many visitors, particularly older and retired residents, had asked where they could play pickleball.
Planning for the courts began last fall, according to City Parks and Recreation Director Kelly Daughtry. Medlin explained the tourism benefits:
“Any asset we have that we can recommend to people to get them to stay here a little longer is part of the marketing plan…maybe they’ll come for tournaments, and while they’re here they’ll eat, maybe spend the night, get gas, and spend some money while they’re here.”
Community Impact and Usage
Daughtry highlighted the importance of the HCCVB’s support.
“The city does have limited funds, and we’re trying to use the funds that the city gives to us to try to maintain some things, so we don’t have very many opportunities to provide new things to the community without our partnership.”
Even before the ribbon-cutting, the courts were in use.
“There are people out here almost every day,” (Kelly Daughtry).
The park also has new playground equipment, funded by insurance after storm damage in May.
Player Experiences
Local player Mike Vosburg, 71, drove from Emporia to practice and praised the new facility.
“It’s a good fellowship game and conditioning game,”(Mike Vosburg).
Vosburg noted that the courts support both beginners and experienced players, help build friendships, and improve fitness.
“Pickleball is a great game all the way around—for fellowship, number one—and you build relationships with people…you get to improve your craft, and play with people and watch people grow from beginners all the way to experienced.”
Future Benefits
The new Rochelle Park pickleball courts are expected to improve quality of life for residents and attract tourists. With local support and occupancy tax funding, the city aims to offer a safe, accessible, and enjoyable place for community members and visitors to play pickleball.
