James Madison University Pickleball Courts: James Madison University opened four new pickleball courts next to Hillside Field on September 1, 2025. The courts replaced one of the two roller street hockey courts at the University Recreation Center (UREC) due to growing interest in pickleball among students, faculty, and staff.
Upgrades and Improvements
University Recreation Director Eric Nickel said the new courts were added because
“the ones we have are really well used.” (Kristin Gibson),
associate director for UREC Services Engagement, explained the renovation included resurfacing the old court, installing nets, and repairing fencing. The remaining hockey court was also updated with new fencing and baseboards for reservations and Intramural Sports use.
Access and Equipment
The courts are open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. to all JMU students, faculty, and staff. For those without equipment, pickleball rentals are available at the UREC equipment center.
Student Reactions
Freshman health sciences major Leila Unzueta-Ventura said she was excited about the new courts.
“For me, exercise is a big part of my life, so it’s really cool to be able to come out to [the courts] and play,”(Leila Unzueta-Ventura).
Freshman integrated science and technology major Brandon Fecht added that the courts are a great place to meet new people and enjoy outdoor activity.
Campus Impact
Eric Nickel noted that the new courts have increased activity in the area.
“Often, those basketball courts at the other end are used all night. That was the only thing going on out there, so now both ends of the courts have activity.”(Eric Nickel)
The new pickleball courts provide a space for recreation, social interaction, and campus engagement, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity at JMU.
