Purple Pickleball Tournament Smashes Fundraising Goal, Unites Community for Survivors

More than 150 pickleball players gathered at the Al Kruse Tennis and Pickleball Center on Saturday for the second annual Purple Pickleball Tournament, raising an impressive $70,000 for The Purple Door. The local nonprofit supports survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, making the event a powerful mix of sport and purpose.

A Celebration of Fun and Support

The tournament brought together 77 teams and a large crowd of families, vendors, and community supporters. Players competed throughout the day, while attendees learned about The Purple Door’s mission to protect and empower survivors. The event highlighted how pickleball can unite people for a meaningful cause.

Leaders Share the Mission

Frances Wilson, President and CEO of The Purple Door, praised the tournament’s impact.

“People love pickleball! It’s become so popular and it’s helped us reach another group of people about what we do.

People are having so much fun and it’s great for people to associate something fun with the work of The Purple Door – because I know a lot of people don’t think about that but the reality is, we’re helping keep people safe and helping people who are ready to create a better life for themselves and their kids.”(Frances Wilson)

First-Time Players Join the Action

Among the participants was a lively team from KIII-TV. Meteorologist Alan Holt and Sports Director Chris Thomasson played their first-ever pickleball games with skilled young partners Sheridan and Piper, who kept them competitive with their strong play and coaching. Anchor/Reporter Lexis Greene and Meteorologist Carly Smith also brought energy and excitement, hustling across the courts in their matches.

The success of the second annual tournament underscored the growing popularity of pickleball in the Coastal Bend and the ongoing need to support survivors.
