Sterling Heights Unveils $10M Indoor Pickleball Courts—Residents Invited to Shape the Future

Sterling Heights Indoor Pickleball Courts: The Sterling Heights Parks & Recreation Department will host a public feedback session on Tuesday, September 30, from 4:30–6 p.m. at the Community Center. Residents can learn about the new indoor pickleball facility and provide ideas on amenities and design.

Project Overview

The city plans to build a $10 million state-of-the-art complex on Van Dyke Avenue, north of 15 Mile Road, in the MJR Marketplace Cinema parking lot. The project was approved as part of the city’s “Pathway to Play and Preservation” millage, which voters passed last November.

The facility will include nine pickleball courts, six tournament-ready table tennis courts, and spaces for community gatherings. Additional features will include restrooms, locker rooms, a nursing mothers’ room, and a zen meditation room for quiet reflection or prayer.

Community Access and Costs

Drop-in pickleball and table tennis play will be free for residents, according to Parks & Recreation officials. Programs, leagues, tournaments, and court rentals will require a modest fee. Officials said municipally-owned courts provide a low-cost alternative to private clubs and appeal to residents of all ages.

Next Steps

The city plans to purchase the property at 35630 Van Dyke Avenue and transform it into the first municipally-funded indoor pickleball facility in Macomb County and only the second in Michigan. The Sterling Heights pickleball center is scheduled to open in July 2026.
