East Campus Pickleball Closure: Tennis Courts Removed

East Campus Pickleball Closure: The tennis and pickleball courts on East Campus closed Wednesday, following Monday’s update on planned court closures.

Starting August 7, two tennis courts and six pickleball courts nearest Brodie Recreation Center will reopen, while six other tennis courts will remain closed and eventually be permanently removed. The closures are part of the University’s plan to accommodate the expanded footprint and utilities of Lilly Library, which began a two-year renovation process in May. The original announcement on April 24 only communicated the plan to uproot the six tennis courts closest to Lilly, but this week’s closure was an additional measure not initially disclosed.

Long-Term Plans and New Facilities

The eight courts reopening on August 7 are expected to stay open throughout the renovation process. Meanwhile, the University plans to build six new tennis courts and six new pickleball courts in the Haynes Field area on the west side of Brodie Gym. These new facilities are anticipated to be completed by 2025. Once the new courts are ready, the existing ones will be demolished and replaced with a landscaped quad, featuring grass and trees, enhancing the campus’s green space.

Impact on Campus Community

This closure comes about six weeks after Brodie Recreation Center completed a two-month cleaning and renovation following the discovery of lead dust in the pool maintenance area of Brodie Aquatics Center and on the floor throughout other parts of the general facility. The closure of Brodie Recreation Center had caused frustration among some students, who had to alter their exercise routines in response to the absence of an East Campus gym and a reportedly busier Wilson Recreation Center.

The ongoing renovations and the construction of new courts indicate the University’s commitment to providing updated and improved recreational facilities, despite the temporary disruptions caused by the closures.

News in Brief: East Campus Pickleball Closure

The tennis and pickleball courts on East Campus closed Wednesday for updates, with two tennis and six pickleball courts reopening on August 7. Six other tennis courts will be permanently removed to expand Lilly Library, which is undergoing a two-year renovation. New tennis and pickleball courts will be constructed at Haynes Field by 2025, replacing the existing ones with a landscaped quad. This closure follows a recent two-month renovation of Brodie Recreation Center due to lead dust, causing some student frustration. Despite disruptions, the university aims to enhance recreational facilities for the future.
