New Pickleball Courts at Peterson Park: The new pickleball courts at Peterson Park, completed earlier this summer, have rapidly become a focal point for local sports enthusiasts. Since their opening, the courts have seen robust activity, attracting players from dawn until dusk.
Jim Closson, a Mattoon City Council member and the city’s parks superintendent, has observed the high level of engagement: “There are people who are out there in the mornings at 6 a.m. There is a Wednesday night group. There are a lot of players on the weekend, of course.” The enthusiasm for the new facility is evident in the consistent crowds and varied play schedules.
The courts proved especially popular during Bagelfest, held from July 17-20. The event, featuring concerts, carnival rides, food vendors, and other attractions, did not deter pickleball enthusiasts. In fact, the vibrant atmosphere seemed to enhance the experience. Pickleball player Lea Northam commented, “It was enjoyable playing during Bagelfest with all the people, rides, and music around.”
The courts’ integration into such a high-profile community event underscores their significance as a recreational asset and reflects their successful reception among local residents.
