Pickleball Courts Arriving Pioneer Park: Brentwood Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved the conversion of Pioneer Park’s basketball courts into a dual-use pickleball facility. Commissioner John Tomei praised the staff for their swift response to his proposal, noting, “I’d like to thank staff because I sent this in maybe a month ago. It’s the end of July and we have a reply.”
Implementation Details
Instead of constructing dedicated new pickleball courts, the plan involves transforming the existing basketball courts into a shared space for pickleball. This approach mirrors the “pilot program” implemented at Creekside Park during its court construction phase. The project includes setting up a self-service mobile net system, with city staff providing a storage locker for the equipment. Estimated at $650, the project’s cost is covered by the Park and Trail Improvement Fund, with $250 allocated for line painting and signage. The remaining $400 will fund informational signs about court rules and setup.
Historical Context and Community Impact
Originally, the park’s 2018 design included two pickleball courts, but they were omitted from the final plans. The nearby Los Ovilos Pavilion already hosts four dedicated pickleball courts. Commissioner Michelle Gallardo inquired about operational logistics, and Parks Maintenance Manager Aaron Wanden revealed that, similar to the Creekside model, there would be designated hours for pickleball use, primarily in the mornings and evenings.
Community Concerns and Benefits
Commissioner Blythe Lind highlighted the location’s advantage in reducing noise complaints, noting that Pioneer Park’s distance from residential areas would reduce potential disturbances. “I know one of the concerns with the current pickleball court is the noise in the neighborhood. It’s a great way to use up that space,” Lind remarked, emphasizing the thoughtful placement of the new courts.

News in Brief: Pickleball Courts Arriving Pioneer Park
On July 25, Brentwood Parks and Recreation Commission approved transforming Pioneer Park’s basketball courts into a dual-purpose pickleball facility. The decision followed a proposal from Commissioner John Tomei, who commended the swift action of city staff. Instead of constructing new pickleball courts, existing basketball courts will be adapted with mobile nets and a storage locker, similar to a previous pilot program. The $650 project will use funds from the Park and Trail Improvement Fund, covering line painting and signage costs. Although the park initially planned for two new pickleball courts in 2018, they were omitted from the final design.
