New Pickleball Courts Coming to Mancos: Plan to Revolutionize Experience

New Pickleball Courts Coming to Mancos: In an ambitious effort to elevate community recreation, Mancos has announced plans to revamp its local park, Boyle Park, by adding pickleball and sandpit volleyball courts. This significant move is part of a comprehensive master plan designed to shape the town’s recreational facilities over the next two decades.

Community Input Drives Park Renovation Vision

“So, what we’re doing is we’re embarking on, basically, a park renovation,” said Mancos Mayor Cindy Simpson. “We’re going to be updating some things and moving some things around, and we’re looking for grant money, stuff like that.”

“We kind of plot it out like, ‘OK, over the next, you know, 20 years, this is what people want and what we think we can do, and we’re just going to start working away at them and trying to make them happen.” – (Cindy Simpson)

Funding and Implementation Strategy

The $1.2 million project, spearheaded by Town Administrator Heather Alvarez, is currently in the funding phase. Alvarez emphasized the importance of securing financial support to bring this vision to life.

“Today, we’re actively seeking funding, and then once we have that funding, we will move forward with the project. It is the No. 1 priority of the town and trails master plan.” – (Cindy Simpson)

The initiative took root about a year ago during a “visioning session” that engaged over 120 community members, including many children. Simpson highlighted the enthusiasm and input received, noting that pickleball courts and sandpit volleyball courts topped the list of desired updates.

“What we did was we advertised we were working on a new vision statement for the town. We got a lot of really wonderful input on what people want out of their parks. You know, what did they want in the parks? What did they want in terms of entertainment, recreational services, things like that.” – (Cindy Simpson)

Focus on Accessibility and Community Needs

While exact timelines for the new pickleball courts and other features are still being determined, there is optimism that groundbreaking could begin as early as next year. The project includes the addition of two pickleball courts, with careful consideration given to their placement to minimize noise disturbances for nearby residents.

“Hopefully, where we’re putting it will impact the fewest people possible. We’re trying to take that into consideration.” – (Cindy Simpson)

Beyond the pickleball courts, the renovation plans also feature improved ADA sidewalks and ramps to enhance accessibility throughout the park.

“Right now, the sidewalks don’t go to all of them. We’re going to do ADA ramps and have the sidewalks go to each of the structures, so that people can get around a little bit better.” – (Cindy Simpson)
