DJ Young Reflects on His Early Days: In a recent discussion on his podcast with Dekel Bar, DJ Young shared candidly about his early experiences with pickleball, highlighting a journey that began with reluctance and evolved into a deep-seated passion. His narrative offers a fascinating glimpse into how initial doubts can transform into a profound appreciation for a sport.
An Unexpected Start
DJ Young’s foray into pickleball was marked by an unusual twist of fate. He recounted how he first played the sport in 2017, taking part in a tournament under his father’s name. “Me and my dad have the same name,” Young explained. “He was going to play a tournament, but something happened to his AES or something, so I played for him.” Initially, Young had little intention of continuing with pickleball, thinking it would be a one-time experience. “I was like, ‘I’ll never play again,'” he admitted. However, the proximity of the tournament to his parents’ house made it convenient, leading him to participate despite his initial reservations.
From Casual Play to Serious Commitment
After this initial experience, Young did not immediately pursue pickleball further. It wasn’t until he completed his senior year in high school that he picked up the paddle again, this time at the SoCal Classic. “I didn’t pick up the paddle until I was done with my senior year,” he noted. This period marked a turning point in Young’s relationship with the sport, as he began to engage more seriously and explore its potential.
Youth and Financial Flexibility
Young shared insights into how his age and relatively low financial needs shaped his experience in pickleball. “In my case, I’m 20 years old,” he said. “I don’t need much to live. I need to make just enough money where I’m doing kind of like whatever I want.” For Young, the simplicity of his financial needs allowed him to enjoy the sport without the pressures that often come with financial stability. He explained that making a modest income while pursuing his passion for pickleball was sufficient to maintain a fulfilling lifestyle. “If I make a little bit of money and I can do what I like, I’m living life great,” he added.
Looking Ahead
While Young appreciates the flexibility his youth provides, he also acknowledges that this phase of life is not without its changes. “Obviously, with years, like more responsibilities coming, whatever,” he noted, hinting at the evolving nature of his life as he matures. This awareness of future responsibilities contrasts with the freedom he currently enjoys, highlighting the transient nature of youth and its associated advantages.
