From Fire Chief to Pickleball Champion: Former Baton Rouge Fire Chief Edwin Smith dedicated over forty years to saving lives. Now, in his retirement, he has found something that helps save his own life: pickleball.
A Life-Changing Emergency
In 2018, Smith experienced a severe cardiac emergency that brought him to the brink. Rushed to the emergency room, he discovered that his liver had stopped functioning, and his kidneys and heart were operating at less than 10%. The prognosis was grim. Smith was transferred to Ochsner, where doctors implanted a revolutionary heart pump called a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), which restored his life.
Discovering Pickleball
After regaining his strength and mobility, Smith sought ways to stay healthy and active. It was then that he discovered pickleball, a sport that would become a vital part of his recovery and well-being. The game not only provided physical exercise but also a new community and a sense of purpose.
Smith’s dedication to the sport paid off when he and his friend won gold in the Men’s Doubles Pickleball ages 65-69 category at the 2022 Louisiana Senior Games. This achievement marked a significant milestone in Smith’s journey, showing his resilience and determination.
Training for the Future
Looking ahead, Smith is now training for the 2024 Louisiana Senior Games, set to take place from October 4-6. His sights are also set on qualifying for the national finals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“This computer runs the pump that runs my heart. So when you are on this, it’s basically a life-changing event. I went through some difficult times, and fortunately, through some mutual friends, I discovered pickleball. It really gave me an extension to do things and have a focus and set goals for things. It’s really been a great joy to experience this over the last few years.” – (Smith)
