Community and Charity
Hannah Garnett, the special events manager for The Ronald McDonald House, emphasized the significance of the Wildcats’ involvement. “It’s really awesome to have a coach like Pope that came in and said the first day, like, we are partnering with charities in the community and not only just us, but so many charities in Lexington. And it’s really such an honor to be one of those that are chosen. It shows that they’re leading out of that place of charity and philanthropic idea first, even before they’re starting their pre-season training. And so it just really shows the culture of this team, the culture that Pope is creating.”
Tournament’s Impact
This beginner-friendly tournament aimed to unite the greater Lexington community while showing the vital services provided by the Ronald McDonald House. The event organizers confirmed that all proceeds were directed toward supporting the nonprofit’s cause.
Player Involvement
Kerr Kriisa, a fifth-year transfer on the U-K men’s basketball team, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I think it’s special and I think it’s super cool that we can do those things before the season, so we get to know and interact our fans closer and have a better understanding of the brand of Kentucky and playing for Kentucky and representing the whole state. So, I think it’s pretty cool.”
Community Reception
Attendees and participants alike shared their excitement about playing and meeting the new basketball team before their season kicks off. The event not only created community spirit but also highlighted the Wildcats’ commitment to charity and engagement with their fans.
