New Pickleball Courts in Scranton’s Multi-Court Plan

New Pickleball Courts in Scranton: Scranton is advancing its pickleball plans with projects at two parks in the city. Construction has commenced at Billy Barrett Park on Colliery Avenue in Minooka, marking the city’s first pickleball courts. City Business Administrator Eileen Cipriani indicated that two courts are expected to be completed later this year.

In addition, a public notice was issued last month for proposals on a “multi-court” project at Nay Aug Park. This ambitious project will include eight pickleball courts and two regulation-sized basketball courts. The city aims to break ground this fall and complete the project by late spring next year. The $1.2 million project is funded by $500,000 from the state Redevelopment Capital Assistance Program and $700,000 in city matching funds.

Location and Features

The new courts at Nay Aug Park will be located between the former slide pool and the existing sand volleyball court, near the concession stand/community building. This project also includes the installation of stormwater infrastructure for the new courts and a future pool complex, replacing two old, leaky pools removed in recent years.

Court Specifications and New Amenities

According to USA Pickleball, a standard pickleball court measures 20-by-44 feet, similar to a doubles badminton court. It features a net height of 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches in the middle, with markings similar to a tennis court. The multi-court project at Nay Aug Park will be complemented by a new ADA-accessible playground, the Butterfly Playground, to be situated behind the former zoo building occupied by the St. Cats and Dogs spay/neuter clinic.

“Nay Aug is Scranton’s most beloved park, so it’s fitting that we are revitalizing it with features that excite a range of visitors. The new pickleball and multipurpose courts will complement the new pool complex and ADA-accessible Butterfly Playground, giving visitors of all ages and abilities options to join the fun.” – (Mayor Paige Gebhardt Cognetti)
