New Pickleball Facility and Restaurant in Granbury: Granbury is on the verge of expanding its recreational landscape, as plans for a new pickleball facility have been given the green light. The Granbury City Council, in a unanimous decision on August 6, approved a special use permit that will allow the Sporty Pickle venue to operate as an outdoor amusement center within a heavy commercial zoning district.
The Facility’s Features and Location
Situated at 2440 E. U.S. Highway 377, Sporty Pickle is set to be a significant addition to the local scene, offering indoor and outdoor pickleball courts along with a full-service restaurant.
The nearly five-acre site, which will replace existing structures slated for demolition, boasts convenient access from Old Granbury Road and U.S. 377. The facility will feature six indoor courts and four outdoor courts, each shielded by metal canopies to mitigate weather conditions and noise.
Community Reactions and Council Approval
Despite receiving mixed feedback from nearby property owners, with one letter of support and one of opposition, the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the project unanimously. Community Development Director Kira Wauwie noted that the project had broad support within the commission, which voted 6-0 in favor of the development.
Addressing Concerns and Moving Forward
During the council discussion, concerns about pickleballs potentially landing on U.S. 377 were addressed by owner Frank Dale, who assured that a 6-foot chain-link fence with iron gates would enclose the outdoor facility, preventing any balls from escaping. Additionally, each court will be equipped with a 48-inch gate to further secure the area.
Mayor Pro Tem Steven Vale, who humorously acknowledged the growing popularity of pickleball, inquired about operating hours. Dale responded that the facility might operate from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, with extended hours on weekends, possibly until midnight, depending on demand.
City Manager Chris Coffman expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the positive impact it could have on a piece of property long in need of development. The City Council ultimately approved the specific use permit with conditions, ensuring that parking and storage areas will be paved, fire lanes will remain unobstructed, and the driveway on U.S. 377 can be relocated if required by TxDOT.
