Pickleball-Only Courts Proposed for Nye Park: Review Awaits

Pickleball-Only Courts Proposed for Nye Park: The debate over pickleball in North Falmouth takes center stage next month. On Wednesday, September 11, the recreation committee will meet at 7 PM to consider a proposal to repaint the tennis courts at Nye Park for pickleball use. Joseph R. Brodsky of East Falmouth, alongside other pickleball advocates, will make their case for the conversion, highlighting the sport’s benefits. The session will include a discussion involving residents with varying views on pickleball’s impact, especially regarding noise concerns.

Committee’s Position

Sandra L. Cuny, vice chairwoman of the committee, emphasized that no decisions would be made without thorough discussion. “We’re in no way going to paint pickleball lines over those tennis courts without having a discussion with all parties involved,” Ms. Cuny stated, showing the committee’s commitment to considering all perspectives before taking action.

Updates on Pickleball Facilities

In other pickleball news, the committee learned that play has commenced on the newly marked courts at Falmouth High School. However, Linda A. Jarvis, a local player, reported on August 14 that while lines are in place, nets are still absent. Joseph E. Olenick, the outgoing recreation director, mentioned efforts to announce and promote the courts’ official opening but could not provide a precise date.

Farewell to the Outgoing Director

Olenick also informed the committee that work began this week to remove pickleball lines from the Lawrence School courts, though a completion date is yet to be determined. In an affectionate moment, Olenick bid farewell to the committee during his final meeting before retirement. “I’m gonna miss all of you,” he expressed. Julie Williams-Tinkham will assume the role of recreation director starting August 16.
