New Pickleball Courts at Panther Park from Generous Donation

New Pickleball Courts at Panther Park: Amory is on track to add dedicated pickleball courts to Panther Park, thanks to a generous donation from E.E. Pickle Funeral Home. During the board of aldermen’s meeting on August 6, the donation was accepted, though the exact amount remains undisclosed. Mayor Corey Glenn expressed gratitude, emphasizing the opportunity to meet community demand.

“I’m very thankful for it. We have a great opportunity to go out there and offer our citizens something that they’re requesting.” – (Mayor Corey Glenn)

Construction Plans and Funding Allocations

The board has also moved to advertise for quotes to construct the new pickleball courts. Mayor Glenn anticipates more details in the next meeting. In other financial decisions, the board approved the allocation of $100,000 in FEMA funds for debris site reclamation, to be split between Old Amory Golf Course and Amory Port North. Restrictions on the use of these funds were clarified by Glenn.

“It has to be relevant to either trucks or some damages associated to that site. It can’t just be tornado damages to say like a building. It has to be used in these two areas and cannot be used anywhere else.” – (Mayor Corey Glenn)

Sidewalk Replacement and Website Update

Additionally, the board agreed to advertise for FEMA-funded sidewalk replacement due to storm damage, with $28,000 allocated for this purpose. The city will also partner with CivicPlus for a website overhaul, including design, development, and hosting, with the initial payment set at $8,370. This upgrade will also enable text message alerts for residents.

“We have a catalog of what they’ve gone out there and identified in specific areas. This is FEMA money, $28,000, and they’ve listed where it has to go.” – (Mayor Corey Glenn)

Grant Applications and Community Initiatives

Amory is set to apply for TVA Community Investment and Cares Grants. The former will support the completion of Main Street’s speaker system and Carlos Moore Field, while the latter will benefit a 501(c)(3) focused on Main Street beautification.

“The suggestion this year is to position that money into the 501(c)(3) of Main Street to continue beautification and decorations associated with that organization.” – (Mayor Corey Glenn)

Food Truck Tuesdays and Community Engagement

Food Truck Tuesdays launched on August 6, with a 90-day trial period allowing licensed mobile vendors to operate near Panther Park. Adjustments to operating hours were made in response to vendor feedback.

Police Training and Tribute Resolutions

In a final note, the board acknowledged police training hours and approved tribute resolutions for former alderman John Darden and Dot Burrow, recently honored by the National High School Sports Hall of Fame.
