New Pickleball Courts at South Napa Century Set to Transform

New Pickleball Courts at South Napa: For Napa residents passionate about pickleball or soccer, relief is on the horizon. The South Napa Century Center will soon host four temporary pickleball courts and a soccer practice field, thanks to a proposal from the Gasser Foundation. This initiative aims to utilize vacant plots at the complex to address the growing recreational needs of the community.

Gasser Foundation’s Vision

“Helping to meet the recreational needs of our community with these temporary facilities is in line with the Foundation’s mission and makes use of several vacant building pads at the South Napa Century Center,” said Mitch Wippern, chief operating officer of the Gasser Foundation. “Pickleball is a very popular sport, the demand for courts is growing and Napa currently has limited options for playing,” Wippern added. He also noted that the soccer community requires practice fields.

Pickleball Courts Details

Local pickleball enthusiasts, like Micah Dirksen from the Napa Valley Pickleball Steering Committee, are enthusiastic about the new courts. “The city has a thriving pickleball community that’s currently severely underserved in terms of facilities,” Dirksen said. The courts will feature 10-foot-high black cyclone fencing and operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or sunset, mirroring the setup at Los Flores Community Center.

Soccer Field Plans

The soccer pitch, intended for Napa United Soccer Club, will be located at the corner of Gasser Drive and Hartle Court. Measuring approximately 60 by 120 feet, it will include rebound boards and cyclone fencing. Napa United President Karl Frisinger sees this as a significant opportunity. “There is a huge need for better quality fields in Napa, and in a central location,” Frisinger said. The field will host youth practices five days a week, accommodating 20 to 30 players per session.

Community Impact

The introduction of these facilities is expected to alleviate current pressures on existing sports venues, offering a more suitable environment for practices and community use. The lease for the new facilities is still being finalized but may extend up to three years.

Commercial Space Update

Wippern did not address why the vacant pads at the Century Center remain undeveloped. According to an online listing, approximately 14,989 square feet of commercial space at 135 Gasser Drive, previously occupied by Naked Wines, is available for sublease at $30,171 per month.
