Raleigh’s Pickleball Revolution: $125 Million Swing Racket and Paddle Facility to Debut

Raleigh’s Pickleball Revolution: A groundbreaking new sports facility in Raleigh’s Brier Creek area is now projected to cost a staggering $125 million, with an anticipated opening by late 2026. The Swing Racket and Paddle complex, envisioned by entrepreneur Rob Autry, aims to redefine recreational spaces on a global scale. “It is a dream come true,” Autry remarked, reflecting the ambitious nature of the project.

City’s Confidence and Economic Impact

Raleigh’s Director of Parks, Stephen Bentley, expressed confidence that the facility will indeed open by the end of 2026. “We will be looking at having a great grand opening,” Bentley assured. The facility’s scale is impressive, featuring 28 tennis courts, 25 pickleball courts, 15 padel courts, four beach tennis/volleyball courts, and a ping pong lounge.

The city’s agreement includes a $275,000 annual lease payment for the next 100 years, with a 3% increase each year. Additionally, a $10 million economic incentive grant was recently approved. Bentley highlighted the project’s broader impact, stating,

“This is basically an economic development project for the entire Triangle and the city. There will be no other facility like it in the United States.”

Delays and Adjustments

Initially opened in 2020 with a projected cost of $55 million and an opening date of 2022, the project has faced several delays and cost increases. By 2022, the estimated cost had risen to $70 million with a revised opening in 2024. The latest budget hike is attributed to skyrocketing construction prices due to COVID, the growing popularity of pickleball, and a partnership with Wilson Sporting Goods that expanded the facility’s scope.

“Our permits are in [and] our groundbreaking is done. We have some incredible partners that are a part of this process and just the size and scope of this project has changed dramatically.” – (Autry)

Future Prospects and Community Impact

Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin emphasized the facility’s potential benefits:

“Racquet and paddle sports are among the sports industry’s hottest businesses. We are excited to see the huge impact Swing creates in terms of jobs, tourism, and special events that will bring amateurs and professionals to our region for competition.”

“Swing will be an extension of our existing parks and recreation programs with trails that connect to our existing greenways. This partnership further enhances Raleigh’s commitment to a common connection centered on sustainability, social good and inclusion.”

The venue will integrate with existing parks and recreation programs, with trails connecting to Raleigh’s greenways. Additionally, celebrity chef Fabio Viviani will oversee the facility’s food and beverage offerings, further enhancing the venue’s appeal.
