Miami Gardens Debuts Pickleball at Hard Rock Stadium

Miami Gardens Debuts Pickleball: Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver G. Gilbert III is taking a step toward promoting health and sportsmanship by hosting an inaugural pickleball tournament at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. This initiative is more than just a sports event; it’s an opportunity to engage the community in an exciting and rapidly growing sport.

Partnering with the Sunshine State Games, the tournament serves as a kickoff event for the Orange Blossom Classic, an annual HBCU college football game that draws crowds from across the country.

“This is one of the qualifying events. So, if you come, register, perform well, and win here, it actually qualifies you to move onto state tournaments. That’s a very exciting function.” – (Gilbert)

Pickleball’s Rising Popularity in the Community

Chairman Gilbert is keen on introducing pickleball to the community, recognizing its potential to promote physical activity.

“Pickleball is the fastest growing and easiest sport to participate in, in America right now. It’s just so exciting. I realize how much I love it, and I also realize that sometimes we don’t have these things introduced to our community.” – (Gilbert)

With the Orange Blossom Classic drawing fans from various HBCUs, the event is perfectly timed.

“The Orange Blossom Classic features two Historically Black Colleges and Universities coming to Miami Gardens from all across the country—North Carolina, Alabama, people are coming here to play. Let’s introduce pickleball to this audience.”(Gilbert)

A Tournament for All Skill Levels

The tournament will include men’s and women’s doubles competitions, open to participants of all skill levels between the ages of 19 and 60. This inclusivity is a key aspect of the event, designed to bring together community members in a friendly, competitive environment.

Gilbert emphasized the comprehensive experience awaiting participants and spectators.

“Listen, between the Sunshine State Games, the Orange Blossom Classic, the city of Miami Gardens, the county, all of the food trucks that are coming, the DJs. This isn’t just pickleball; this is an experience we’re providing.” – (Gilbert)

Set to take place on Sunday, August 25, at 8 a.m., the tournament will be held at the Hard Rock Stadium Tennis Plaza in Miami Gardens.
