Warren City’s Pickleball Surge: New Courts Bring Community Together

Warren City’s Pickleball Surge: Warren City has witnessed a remarkable surge in pickleball’s popularity, leading to the swift development of new courts. Last year, with support from private funding, Betts Park saw the addition of these pickleball courts, driven by a community eager to bring the sport to the area.

A Sport’s Resurgence

Originating in the Pacific Northwest in 1965, pickleball has seen a resurgence, particularly in Warren County. Mike Holtz, Warren City Manager, observed,

“When I come down here before work, the courts are typically always filled, and there are eight courts. It’s a very busy sport, it’s very popular here.”

Community Effort Shines

Warren resident Marlene Sandberg, soon to be inducted into the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame for her tennis accomplishments, has embraced the new facilities.

I have been playing pickleball for probably twelve years and was probably one of the first to play the sport here in Warren. As you can see these beautiful courts, we needed them because we have had so many people that are playing now.” – (Sandberg)

City Manager Holtz highlighted the community-driven initiative behind the pickleball courts,

“This was really a true effort from private individuals. Folks came to the city a couple of years ago and wanted them built. They raised the funds through private foundations and were able to get the facilities built in about a year’s time.” – (Holtz)

Courts Become a Local Hub

The new courts have become a central gathering spot for locals and attract visitors from outside the area. Johnsonburg resident Mike BaCamal remarked,

“I drove here from Johnsonburg to play with friends, and these courts are beautiful. But as for the popularity of pickleball, it is a crazy thing. When we go on vacation, we play pickleball with a lot of other people, both young and old, so I guess it really has taken over.” – (BaCamal)

With pickleball possibly eyeing a future in the Olympics, its growing popularity in Warren County indicates that this trend is likely here to stay.

News in Brief: Warren City’s Pickleball Surge

Warren City is experiencing a pickleball boom, spurring the rapid development of new courts at Betts Park. The sport, which has gained popularity since its 1965 origins in the Pacific Northwest, now draws locals and visitors. Warren City Manager Mike Holtz notes the courts are always busy, while Marlene Sandberg, a long-time player, praises the new facilities.
