Lincolnville Pickleball Fundraiser: With the newly resurfaced town courts and freshly painted pickleball lines, Lincolnville’s community is coming together for a cause. On Saturday, August 24, local pickleball players will host the “Playing it Forward” fundraising pickleball scramble, an event aimed at supporting the Lincolnville Improvement Association’s (LIA) scholarship fund. The event kicks off at 8:30 a.m. and wraps up around 11:30 a.m. with a potluck picnic, inviting curious onlookers to bring a folding chair, watch the matches, and cheer on the players.
The Game Plan
Sixteen players will participate in the scramble, playing six games each. A unique aspect of this event is the random pairing of partners for every game, ensuring a mix of playing styles and fostering camaraderie. After six rounds, the four players with the highest scores will compete in a championship round to determine the event’s top player.
Community Effort and Support
The town tennis courts on Lynx Drive, adjacent to Lincolnville Central School, now sport new pickleball lines. This inclusion is part of a broader effort to make the sport accessible and enjoyable for all, offering a less stressful and competitive environment than traditional sports. During winter, the games shift indoors to the school gym, ensuring year-round engagement.
This event is about more than just fun and games. By donating the tournament’s proceeds to the LIA scholarship fund, the community pickleball players are genuinely “playing it forward.” Over the past three years, the LIA has awarded 19 scholarships, totaling over $26,000, to Lincolnville’s high school graduates heading to college or trade school.
The Growing Popularity of Pickleball
Pickleball is more than just a game—it’s a nationwide phenomenon. Named the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. for three consecutive years, pickleball’s appeal lies in its accessibility. The game has a short learning curve, caters to all ages and fitness levels, and requires minimal equipment.
While the origins of the game’s quirky name are debated—whether it’s from a “pickle boat” crew or a dog named Pickles—what’s undeniable is the game’s light-hearted nature and the joy it brings to its players. Even if it might be too joyful for some traditionalists, as one local tennis player jested, pickleball’s friendly atmosphere is part of its charm.
