New Pickleball Courts at Preservation Park: Major Upgrade Proposal

New Pickleball Courts at Preservation Park: On August 12, Town & Country’s Board of Aldermen deliberated a key resolution that could dramatically enhance Preservation Park’s recreational offerings. The proposal, introduced by Director of Parks & Recreation Anne Nixon with City Administrator Bob Shelton, seeks authorization to apply for a municipal grant to fund major park upgrades, specifically focusing on expanding pickleball facilities.

Plans for Pickleball Courts

The proposed renovation includes the addition of six new pickleball courts at Preservation Park, designed to meet the growing demand for the sport. Nixon emphasized the community’s enthusiasm for the development, stating, “Preservation Park is intended to be the most sports-oriented and adventure-oriented. We had a number of families who were interested in the prospect of the adults playing pickleball and the kids using the bike playground as a family adventure.”

Funding and Costs

The financial aspect of the project is substantial. The municipal park grant could cover up to 90% of the estimated $250,000 cost for the pickleball courts. The total project, including other park upgrades, is projected to cost around $465,000, with the city’s contribution being $51,655. Nixon highlighted the potential revenue from pickleball tournaments, which could generate between $2,000 and $5,000 per event, adding a financial incentive to the upgrade.

Community Impact and Next Steps

The board examined the broader implications of the project, including noise levels and accessibility. With no nearby residences, noise from the pickleball courts is not expected to be a concern. The board also considered the park’s accessibility for future users. Following the discussion, the board decided to postpone the resolution until August 26 for a final decision.
