Pickleball Demand Drives Moulton Council’s Latest Park Plans

Pickleball Demand Drives Moulton: On August 19, the Moulton City Council approved a $142,560 bid from Hood Contracting for paving a parking lot at H.A. Alexander Park. This decision, however, was only the beginning of a larger plan focused on expanding recreational facilities, particularly pickleball courts.

Pickleball Facilities in Focus

Councilman Jason White successfully pushed for a discussion on the agenda regarding the development of new park amenities. The Council aims to collaborate with Pugh Wright McAnally Civil Engineers from Decatur to create plans for a new splash pad, tennis courts, and dedicated pickleball courts at H.A. Alexander Park. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the park’s offerings and address growing community demands.

Deangelo and I are supposed to have a meeting with him (McAnally) Friday morning, and that would be some preliminary work they would have to do for us to kind of get a plan of what we want to do,” Mayor Weatherwax said, referring to himself and Park and Recreation Director Deangelo McDaniel.

Addressing Community Requests

The Council has received numerous requests for dedicated pickleball courts, reflecting the sport’s rising popularity in the area. Additionally, the existing tennis courts at the park are in need of resurfacing, and the splash pad faces issues due to the defunct company that built it. Combining the construction of these facilities, especially the pickleball courts, has become a priority for the Council.

Councilman Brent White emphasized, “So, this is basically just to get it in a posture where we will know what we’re seeking funding for and how much money.” Mayor Weatherwax confirmed the plan, leading to a unanimous vote to proceed with the proposal.

Next Steps and Upcoming Meeting

Following the approval of these resolutions, the Council entered an executive session to discuss a potential real estate transaction. The next scheduled meeting, a work session on August 26, will address budgets, job descriptions, and personnel policies, with a focus on further developing the park’s recreational facilities.
