25 New Pickleball Courts in Huntsville to Feature in Upgrade

25 New Pickleball Courts in Huntsville: Huntsville is set to welcome a state-of-the-art recreation facility that promises to elevate the city’s recreational offerings, particularly for the growing community of pickleball enthusiasts. The new John Hunt Park Recreation Center, a significant $18.5 million investment, will feature 25 lighted pickleball courts covered by an engineered metal structure, ensuring fewer disruptions due to rain. The project, authorized by the City Council and entrusted to Fite Building Company, is slated to begin construction in fall 2024.

A Hub for Multiple Sports and Activities

Spanning 60,580 square feet, the one-story recreation center will be more than just a pickleball haven. It will house four full-sized gymnasiums, equipped with regulation-size basketball and volleyball courts, making it a versatile venue for various sports. The facility will also include a fitness room, multi-purpose activity rooms, office space, and a concession area. The new parking lot, offering 298 spaces, will further enhance the convenience for visitors.

Comprehensive Sitework and Modern Design

The scope of the project extends beyond the recreation center itself. Sitework will include the development of parking, landscaping, and streetscape improvements along Don Mincher Drive. The entire design, crafted by William M. Boehme & Associates, reflects a modern approach to recreational spaces, catering to the needs of Huntsville’s active community.

“When we started planning for the new recreation center, we knew that pickleball had to be a central feature. We wanted to ensure we provided top-notch facilities for this rapidly growing sport, and we’re confident this design will make our pickleball community very happy.”

— Mayor Tommy Battle

Construction Timeline and Next Steps

The construction contract, set for 420 days, outlines a precise timeline for the project’s completion. Work is expected to commence within 10 calendar days following the issuance of a notice to proceed. Once completed, the John Hunt Park Recreation Center will not only be a key addition to the park but also a cornerstone for recreational activities in Huntsville.
