This year’s tournament successfully raised nearly $2,000 for the cause. Kari’s Closet, located near the Reformed Church in Charlevoix, functions as a boutique-style service, offering everything from clothing to school supplies, all at no cost to families who need them.
Kris Way, one of the key organizers and the mother of Kari, after whom the organization is named, expressed her gratitude for the community’s support. “It’s completely free, and we always meet the needs, whether it’s through donations or purchasing what’s missing,” said Way. “Kari’s Closet is an amazing resource, and we’re thrilled to have raised this much to support it.”
The tournament featured 20 players, split into red and blue teams, with the red team narrowly edging out a 17-15 victory. Held at the Charlevoix Township courts, the event was characterized by windy conditions but a high level of enthusiasm. The funds raised will be directed towards back-to-school items for local children.
Despite the tournament’s success, Way highlighted the ongoing challenge of securing dedicated pickleball courts in Charlevoix. She hopes that the event’s success, coupled with the growing popularity of pickleball in the area, will lead to greater recognition and support for both the sport and community initiatives like Kari’s Closet.
