Wilmington Park Set for Pickleball Upgrade and Exciting New Features

Wilmington Park Set for Pickleball: Pickleball enthusiasts in northern New Hanover County may soon have a new venue. Plans are underway to add four pickleball courts to Olsen Park, as per a recent bid advertisement by the city of Wilmington. This development is part of the Olsen Park Phase II project, which also includes a multi-purpose field, an asphalt trail, and additional parking.

The project may expand further with several bid alternates, potentially bringing four more pickleball courts, another multi-purpose field, a conversion of the existing roundabout into a three-way stop, an additional asphalt trail, and conduit for future lighting, according to the city’s plans.

The new pickleball courts will be located next to field number 5. The multi-purpose fields, approximately the size of a standard football field, will be encircled by an eight-foot-wide asphalt trail. A four-foot-high black vinyl-coated chain-link fence will surround the fields. The pickleball courts will also have a chain-link fence, with three sides at four feet and one side at 12 feet in height.

Olsen Park, near Laney High School, currently features five lighted baseball and softball fields, a volleyball court, two picnic shelters, Miracle Field (a specialized rubberized turf field), and the Kiwanis Miracle Playground, the largest accessible playground in the Southeast.

Located at 5510 Olsen Park Lane, the park is a joint project between the city of Wilmington and New Hanover County. It regularly hosts regional and state athletic tournaments.

A pre-bid conference for the project is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sept. 10 at Skyline Center, with final bids due by 3 p.m. on Oct. 8.
