Florida’s Pickleball Parks: The highly anticipated public meetings regarding the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) plan to introduce golf courses, pickleball courts, and hotels to 10 state parks have been postponed. Originally slated for Tuesday, these meetings are now expected to take place during the week of September 2. The delay comes as the department seeks new venues to accommodate the unexpectedly high level of public interest.
New Platform for Public Input
In response to the overwhelming reaction, the DEP has launched a dedicated webpage allowing residents to submit written comments and suggestions on the proposed changes. This digital platform aims to streamline feedback collection and ensure that community voices are heard.
“Great Outdoors Initiative” Started
The DEP’s new “Great Outdoors Initiative” intends to enhance public access to Florida’s state parks by integrating additional outdoor amenities and new lodging options. Despite the department’s efforts to broaden park access, the proposal has faced criticism from environmentalists and concerned citizens who demand the preservation of these natural landscapes.
Due to the overwhelming interest with the 2024-25 Great Outdoors Initiative, DEP is looking for new venues to accommodate the public.
