Port Austin’s 1st Pickleball Tournament: The first annual Port Austin Pickleball Tournament, held at Gallup Park, achieved a notable success, raising $4,000 for the refurbishment of local sports facilities. This event marked a significant milestone for the community, with funds earmarked for resurfacing the pickleball courts, tennis, and basketball courts.

Jerry Haraburda, a member of the Port Austin Pickleball Committee, outlined the committee’s vision: “We also want to dedicate the pickleball sites, tennis courts and basketball courts,” he said. “That’s our goal for the first year.

Event Highlights

The pickleball tournament was met with favorable weather, which contributed to a highly successful day of play. With 48 participants in attendance, the event kicked off at 8:30 a.m. with warm-ups, followed by the commencement of games at 9:00 a.m. The second group began their warm-up at 10:30 a.m., with matches starting promptly at 11:00 a.m.

Haraburda praised the event’s organization and the perfect conditions: “We started at 8:30 a.m. with warm-ups (and) games beginning at 9. The second group started warming up at 10:30 a.m. with 11 a.m. starts. You couldn’t beat the weather or the way the tournament was set up.
