New Pickleball Courts in East Greenwich: The newly constructed pickleball courts at Academy Field in East Greenwich are now open to the public, alongside a new basketball court featuring four nets. The perimeter fencing surrounding the courts is set to be removed on Thursday, signaling the completion of this phase of the project.
Importantly, there will be no reservation system in place for the pickleball courts; usage will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. However, the courts will be reserved for a Senior Center program on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings.
Additionally, indoor and outdoor pickleball sessions are included in the Fall recreation offerings at Swift/Academy, providing further opportunities for residents to participate in this growing sport.
Eldredge Field Renovations Set to Begin
Following the East Greenwich Town Council’s approval of a $522,520 bid, significant work is scheduled to begin at Eldredge Field in September. The project will relocate the softball field closer to the school, aligning it more closely with the existing concrete bleachers along First Avenue.
The renovated field will be “skinned,” a more traditional approach for softball, and will be versatile enough to host girls’ softball, men’s slow pitch, and Little League Juniors games. One of the key enhancements for the girls’ teams is the potential to play under lights, a first for East Greenwich.
In addition to the softball field upgrades, a new walking path will be constructed around the perimeter of Eldredge Field, designed to be accessible for people with mobility issues. Preliminary work has already begun, including the installation of fencing near the school to facilitate ongoing school activities and flag football. The project is funded primarily through a DEM grant, supplemented by $165,000 from the town’s recreation fund.
