Avondale Pickleball Noise Solution: Charges and Ball Type Announced

Avondale Pickleball Noise Solution: During its work session on August 28, the Avondale Estates City Commission discussed new regulations for the local pickleball courts, aiming to address noise concerns from nearby residents. Commissioners have agreed to mandate the use of foam balls to decrease the noise generated by the games. This move reflects a broader effort to mitigate disturbances for residents living near Willis Park, where the pickleball courts are located.

Non-Resident Fee and Operational Changes

The commission has also decided to implement a $5 reservation fee for non-residents. This fee is part of a series of changes designed to manage the high usage of the courts and address community concerns. The long-term goal includes potentially relocating the pickleball courts away from residential areas, a project that would involve constructing new facilities.

Potential Solutions and Community Feedback

At the August 14 meeting, the commission considered various short-term solutions such as limiting play hours and installing sound attenuation blankets. The latter, estimated to cost between $10,000 and $75,000, was deemed less viable given ongoing discussions about relocating the courts. Another proposal involves reducing the number of courts from four to two, with foam balls and the non-resident fee remaining in place.

Enforcing the Foam Ball Requirement

City Manager Patrick Bryant emphasized the challenges of enforcing the foam ball requirement but expressed optimism that with proper signage and equipment provision, adoption rates will be sufficient to achieve quieter play.

“We’re well aware that enforcing the softball requirement is going to be difficult, but we believe if we set that requirement, change the signage at the courts and provide the equipment that enough people will adopt the soft ball technology to accomplish the goal.” – (Bryant)

Commissioner Graham Reiney, who is also a pickleball player, noted that the foam balls do not significantly impact the competitiveness of the game and could reduce noise, though feedback from neighbors will be crucial in assessing the effectiveness.

“I’m a pickleball player. I try to play once a week, and I played with the soft balls for the first time this past Sunday night. For me, my game was no less competitive or no less of a workout with that ball. It did take a little bit of getting used to, it looks a little bit different, it certainly sounds different, which is the whole point.” – (Graham Reiney)

News in Brief: Avondale Pickleball Noise Solution

The Avondale Estates City Commission has decided to require foam balls at local pickleball courts to mitigate noise concerns. A $5 reservation fee for non-residents will also be introduced. The commission is exploring options for relocating the courts to a less residential area and has considered reducing court numbers or adjusting play hours.

City Manager Patrick Bryant acknowledged the difficulties in enforcing the foam ball rule but is hopeful for compliance. Community feedback and further decisions on the implementation timeline are pending.
