Wilmington’s Pickleball Dream: New Expansion Faces Community Backlash

Wilmington’s Pickleball Dream: The Wilmington Planning Commission is gearing up for a pivotal discussion at its upcoming meeting, where the focus will be on a proposed overhaul of the Holly Tree Racquet Club. The ambitious plan aims to transform the existing facility into a pickleball paradise, but it’s not without its controversies.

The proposal includes a significant expansion: converting two existing tennis courts into 10 outdoor pickleball courts, constructing a 28,200 square-foot indoor pickleball arena, adding a netted golf driving range simulator with 10 tees, and building a 1,600-square-foot clubhouse. However, these upgrades come with a price—the removal of nearby trees is necessary to make way for the new features.

Community members voiced their concerns during a June 18 meeting, highlighting potential issues such as increased stormwater runoff, the environmental impact of tree removal, noise, lighting, traffic, operating hours, effects on property values, and changes to the club’s overall structure. As the Planning Commission prepares to deliberate, the outcome of this proposal could reshape the Holly Tree Racquet Club and the surrounding area.
