Free Pickleball Class in Hannibal for Beginners Set For Sept. 9

Free Pickleball Class in Hannibal: Pickleball, recognized as one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., is set to attract newcomers through a free “Pickleball 101” course on September 9. This initiative, led by two dedicated pickleball enthusiasts, aims to introduce new players to the sport’s fundamentals and foster a greater appreciation for its appeal.

The Nature of the Game

Described by enthusiast Tom Batenhorst as a blend of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, pickleball has been captivating players since its inception in 1965. Utilizing paddles and a plastic ball, players engage in rallies over a net until a point is scored.

According to Batenhorst, the game’s accessibility makes it suitable for players of all ages, providing a fun and engaging way to exercise and socialize.

“It’s not a hard sport to pick up. Pretty much anybody can do it. All ages we have out here, from under ten years old to people in their 70s. You meet a lot of people; you get some exercise, too. So, it’s just a lot of fun.” – (Batenhorst)

The Role of Instructors

Bill Baker, another pickleball advocate, will join Batenhorst in teaching the class. Baker, who relishes the competitive aspect of the sport, sees pickleball as a fulfilling outlet for his athletic drive. “I like the competition,” Baker remarked.

“I’ve always played a lot of different sports in my life, and as you get older, you’re looking for outlets for competition.” – (Baker)

Baker also highlighted the sport’s versatility, noting that pickleball can be played in various locations, making it an attractive option for new players.

Course Details and Facilities

The upcoming class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Huckleberry Park in Hannibal. In case of inclement weather, the session will be relocated to the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center.

Participants will have access to six permanent pickleball courts and four temporarily converted tennis courts. “We just want to see more people come out and try and know about the game and learn the game,” Batenhorst emphasized, reflecting the organizers’ commitment to expanding pickleball’s reach.
