The Highvern Pickleball Summer League wrapped up on Sunday at the St Clement’s Golf and Sports Centre, celebrating a season of impressive performances and significant milestones for the sport on the Island. Tom Price, the founder of Jersey Pickleball, highlighted the achievements and growth of pickleball, emphasizing the league’s role in advancing the sport.
“It’s been a fantastic time for Pickleball on the Island. We had local players competing at the English Open for the first time ever. We also had our first-ever triple champion crowned in John [Pasturel], which is a magnificent achievement for a player to complete. The sport is growing from strength to strength and that’s in large part to the fantastic community we have surrounding us.” – (Price)
John Pasturel: A Triple Champion
John “The Flamingo” Pasturel was the standout performer of the summer league, capturing three titles: Division 2 Men’s Singles, Division 2 Men’s Doubles with partner John Corr, and Division 2 Mixed Doubles with his wife, Ann. Pasturel’s impressive performance underlines his dominance and skill throughout the season.
Bero Bobus Shines in Division 1
Local sportsman Bero Bobus also had a notable season, securing victories in two categories: Division 1 Men’s Singles and Division 1 Mixed Doubles with his wife, Loren Bobus. His success further highlights the high level of competition in the league.
Other Notable Performances
Kathryn Brown and Elizabeth Fenlon led the Ladies Doubles category with the highest points, while Joanna Chaplin claimed the Ladies Singles title. In Division 1 Men’s Doubles, Luke Pontin and Tom Middleton emerged victorious, capping off a competitive season.
The league concluded with a prize-giving event featuring hot drinks and cakes, reinforcing the community spirit of the competition. Division 1 Men’s Doubles winner Pontin shared his enthusiasm for the sport.
“I thoroughly enjoyed Pickleball when I tried it for the first time in April, not only for the entertaining game-play and the accessible nature of the sport, but also for the incredible community surrounding it.”
Pontin added a light-hearted note,
“You best believe that the most dynamic duo in Jersey Pickleball’s short history – Jar Jar Dinks – are running it back to cement our rightful place at the peak of the mountain.”
