Picklebrawl in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Ready for Major Pickleball Debut

Salem, Virginia, is ready to make history with its first major pickleball tournament this September. The “Picklebrawl in Virginia’s Blue Ridge” will take center stage from September 13th to the 15th at the James L. Moyer Sports Complex.

This inaugural event marks a significant milestone for the city and the sport, is expected to attract players from across the country. John Laaser, COO of Performance Pickleball and tournament organizer, emphasized the scale of the event, stating,

“This will be the biggest and baddest tournament you’ve ever seen… And it is going to pull people from regions close by and far as well, and we are going to blow the roof off it!” – (John Laaser)

Anticipated Turnout

With a projected 450 out-of-state players, the tournament is set to make a substantial impact. “Pickleball is the most growing sport in the United States, and we’re going to get into this form of sports marketing, and with the new 13 courts coming at the Moyer Sports Complex, we are here!” said John Shaner, director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Salem. The addition of these courts will bring the total to 19, significantly enhancing the city’s pickleball infrastructure.

Economic Impact

The event promises more than just competitive play. According to Shaner, the tournament is a boon for Salem’s economy.

“Its a great weekend to be hosting a big-time pickleball tournament, to be able to put people in our hotels, our restaurants, our grocery stores and our gas stations.” – (Shaner)

Last year, Virginia’s Blue Ridge hosted 35 events, generating approximately $15 million in economic impact.

Future Prospects

The hope is that the tournament will leave a lasting legacy for Salem and its surrounding areas. Professional pickleball player Timothy Cass expressed high expectations, noting,

“I know they are going to blow this through the roof, there are going to be a ton of people there. They are going to draw attention from a lot of key players around the state, country, surrounding areas. It is going to be an outstanding turnout.” – (Timothy Cass)
