Pickleball Included in Rolling Meadows Park: The Rolling Meadows Park District is ready to transform Community Center Park with a range of new features, including the addition of pickleball courts. The 27-acre park, located at 3800 Pheasant Drive, will soon feature two new pickleball courts among other amenities, following recent zoning approvals by the city council.
New Pickleball Courts and Community Amenities
The planned pickleball courts will be situated north and west of the existing park building, which houses the district’s preschool and senior center. The area for the courts, now open space, is positioned about 30 feet south of the nearest single-family homes. According to Hitchcock Design Group, the project’s goal is to introduce new, multi-generational amenities and address the rising demand for popular activities like pickleball.
“The project aims to provide new, multi-generational amenities that are not present anywhere else in the community, as well as meet the demand for amenities growing in popularity, such as pickleball.” – (officials from Hitchcock Design Group0
Community Concerns and Adjustments
During the public hearing in July, concerns were raised by residents about potential increases in light, noise, and activity resulting from the new courts. In response, the city council incorporated several conditions into the final approval ordinance on August 27. These include a mandate that the courts close by 10 p.m. each night. Additionally, the miniature golf course, located between the community center building and Salt Creek, will operate until sunset.
Noise and Lighting Mitigations
To address noise concerns, soundproofing material will be installed on the chain-link fences adjacent to residential areas. The courts will be illuminated by lights on two 40-foot poles, which will be controlled by a button-operated timer to ensure they turn off by 10 p.m. A mix of existing and new evergreen trees will provide further sound and visual buffers.
Additional Park Upgrades
In addition to the pickleball courts, the park will receive a variety of upgrades, including two in-ground game areas for bag toss and ladder toss, a 40-yard dash, a Ninja Warrior-style challenge course, an outdoor bodyweight circuit training space, a shuffleboard court, a 20-by-20-foot picnic shelter, a rain garden with interpretive signage, and connecting pedestrian paths. These enhancements follow the park district’s receipt of a $600,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, with the project slated for completion by April 30, 2025.
