WVU Pickleball Classic Raises Funds for High School Students: Champions Crowned

WVU Pickleball Classic Raises Funds for High School Students: The 2nd annual WVU Medicine Frank Sabado, Jr., M.D. Pickleball Classic concluded with a successful showing, raising over $16,000 to fund scholarships for local high school students. The event, held at the W. Randy Smith Recreation Center, continues to be a prominent fixture in the community, thanks to the efforts of local physicians and community leaders, alongside support from Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation.

Morning Tournament Results

The 8:30 a.m. tournament saw Aladino “New York” Torres and Allison Loizos clinching the top spots in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively. Ivo Galusic and Molly Cobbs finished as runners-up.

Late Morning Tournament Results

In the 10:30 a.m. tournament, Homer Speaker and Jamie Blake emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s divisions. Jeremy Hensley and Lia Anderson secured second place.

Event Background

Established in 2004 and renamed the Frank Sabado, Jr., M.D. Tennis Classic in 2015 to honor Dr. Sabado, the event transitioned to pickleball in 2023. Over its history, it has raised more than $283,000 for WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center, supporting equipment needs and scholarships for future medical professionals.
