Greenville’s New Pickleball Courts Opened at William Wait Park

Greenville’s New Pickleball Courts Opened: Monday night marked a significant moment for Greenville residents, as six new pickleball courts were officially opened at William Wait Park. The courts, located in the park’s northeast corner, were funded in part by a state OSLAD grant. Park District Director Jerry Sauerwein highlighted the grant’s role in making the courts possible during his opening remarks. Sauerwein invited Mike Heath, a city council member and advocate for the courts, to play the first game.

Pickleball Vision Becomes Reality

Heath, who had long championed the idea of pickleball courts in the community, expressed his gratitude. While he credited others for turning the vision into reality, he acknowledged his role in frequently suggesting the project. “The courts are something the community can be proud of,” Heath said, thanking Sauerwein and the park board for their efforts.

Honoring Greenville’s Pickleball Pioneer

Heath also took a moment to remember Lynn Carlson, Sr., who he credited with introducing Greenville to pickleball. To honor Carlson’s legacy, Heath invited Carlson’s wife, Helen, and their son, Lynn, Jr., to participate in the inaugural game. Don Mason, an early enthusiast of the sport in Greenville, was also asked to join them on the court for the ceremonial first point.

Community Celebration and Open Play

Following the opening remarks and exhibition game, which saw Heath, the Carlsons, and Mason take to the court, approximately 60 attendees watched as all six lighted pickleball courts filled with eager players. The courts are now open daily from sunrise until 10 p.m., offering a new recreational opportunity for the Greenville community.
