New Pickleball Courts at Martin Road Park on the Way

New Pickleball Courts at Martin Road Park: Ferndale’s Martin Road Park is ready for significant enhancements following the recent addition of a splash pad in late summer 2022. Construction for the new upgrades will proceed while the park remains open to the public.

Planned Improvements

The park will see the installation of four new pickleball courts, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity and its tendency to take over tennis courts. Other planned upgrades include a full basketball court, a pavilion, a shade structure, and drinking fountains. Additionally, the park will feature ADA-accessible benches, tables, pathways, and parking spaces to improve accessibility.

Funding the Project

The improvements are being funded through a mix of grants and financial support from various sources, including the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Oakland County, the MI Enhancement Grant, American in Bloom, and ARPA. This diverse funding network highlights the community’s commitment to enhancing local recreational facilities.

Future Plans

Ferndale is also advancing the Martin Road Recreation Facility Project, which proposes a new recreation center on the park’s site. The outcome of this project will be determined by voters in the upcoming November election. Further details about the ballot proposal can be accessed on the city’s website.

Additional Upgrades

Wilson Park, another city facility, began its upgrade process in May with a focus on new amenities and improved accessibility features. LaReina Wheeler, Director of Parks and Recreation, emphasized the significance of these changes.

“Wilson Park’s transformation is more than just a project; it’s a promise to our community. We’re creating a space where everyone can come together, play, and connect. This project isn’t just about asphalt and concrete; it’s about building a stronger, more vibrant community.” – (LaReina Wheeler)
