New Pickleball Courts in Brownstown: In a testament to the power of community collaboration, the grand opening of the new pickleball courts at Brownstown Park was celebrated with much enthusiasm on Tuesday morning. “It almost doesn’t seem real,” remarked Nancy Sterling, president of the Brownstown Pickleball Association. “All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the community.”
From Humble Beginnings
The Brownstown Pickleball Association, founded in September 2023, traces its origins to a group of friends who first played on the tennis courts at Brownstown Central High School in the summer of 2019. Once a suitable location became available, the association was formed, and fundraising efforts commenced.
Successful Fundraising
To construct the four new pickleball courts, the association needed to raise $108,000. Remarkably, they met this goal within a few months. Grants were secured from the Jackson County Visitor Center ($20,000), Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority ($15,000), and the Owen-Carr Township Community Endowment ($5,000).
The remaining funds came from local businesses, community members, and pickleball enthusiasts. All fundraising was carried out by volunteer members of the association.

Community Support and Future Plans
The grand opening saw a turnout of local organizations, businesses, and sponsors, with Healthy Jackson County providing snacks, the Brownstown Exchange Club supplying food, and Trolley Car Creamery offering ice cream. Dr. Matthew Beaverson, a new local dentist, expressed his enjoyment of pickleball, recalling fond memories from college.
According to USA Pickleball, the sport is played on a 20-by-44-foot court with a net, combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. “It can get competitive and it gets you moving,” noted Sharon Hurt.
Looking ahead, the association plans to add a building with restrooms, a shelter house, and eventually, lights for nighttime play. They aim to host free clinics, tournaments, and local leagues.
“So far, I have seen families come here to play and learn the sport. Everyone is welcoming and respectful no matter the skill level. That’s all you could have hoped for.” – (Sterling)
