Elizabethtown’s Pickleball Serve Study: Decoding Strategy

Elizabethtown’s Pickleball Serve Study:  Combining a passion for pickleball with mathematics, Miky Wright, a faculty member at ECTC, and William Figary, an engineer from Elizabethtown, have garnered national attention with their latest publication. Their article, “Should You Choose to Serve First in a Pickleball Match? — MATH VALUES,” was published by the esteemed Mathematical Association of America. The study explores the statistical factors that impact pickleball matches, providing valuable insights for players and enthusiasts alike.

Insights and Contributions

Wright, who founded Twin Lakes Pickleball in Leitchfield, merges her love for mathematics with her dedication to the sport. “I’ve been playing pickleball with passion for the past two years, competing in several tournaments. The title of this study has been on my mind,” Wright shared. “I’ve always assumed there was a benefit to serving first, but is there any statistical evidence? As a math instructor who’s been teaching statistics for almost a decade, I needed to find out.

Acknowledgments and Reflections

The research also highlights ECTC’s commitment to academic excellence and community involvement, according to a college release. Wright expressed gratitude to her colleagues Melanie Figary, Joe Galloway, and Navin Madras for their assistance in refining the article.

William Figary, who was newly introduced to pickleball, found the research particularly engaging. “Having recently gotten into playing pickleball, I was intrigued by this question Miky proposed,” Figary said. “I love using math and programming to discover optimal strategies in other games, so I was excited to see where this exploration led us. While some of the outcomes were expected, there were also some surprises along the way that left me very satisfied with what we had accomplished.
