Destin Greenlights New Pickleball Courts: Construction Set for 2025

Destin Greenlights New Pickleball Courts: In a pivotal meeting on September 5, the Destin City Council gave unanimous approval to the construction documents for new pickleball courts. This decision marks a significant step forward in a project that’s been in the works for several months. Council member Teresa Hebert initiated the motion to approve the documents, which was seconded by Johnny King. The vote was unanimous, signaling strong support for the development.

Project Timeline and Scope

The primary question on everyone’s mind was the project’s timeline. Mayor Bobby Wagner inquired about when the city could expect to see the courts completed. Interim City Manager Larry Jones projected that construction could begin in early 2025, with the project wrapping up by December of that year.

The scope of the project includes the creation of four pickleball courts, pavement restriping, stormwater improvements, a restroom facility, court lighting, pedestrian paths, temporary gravel parking, and two shade structures. The estimated cost for the entire project is $400,000.

Funding and Budget Considerations

Finance Director Krystal Strickland outlined the funding situation, noting that the city currently has $375,000 available and is anticipating an additional $50,000 in grant money.

Until we put it out for bid, we want know just how much it is going to cost? I would be thrilled if it comes in under that amount.” Dewey Destin asked.

Council member Dewey Destin expressed concern about the final cost, questioning if it would align with the budget. Destin admitted he would be pleased if the final bid came in under the projected amount.

Next Steps and Expectations

Permitting is scheduled to begin in January 2025, with construction expected to commence in March and conclude by December. Interim City Manager Larry Jones highlighted that the project would span about a year, once it gets underway. “Late next year … if we can get started the first of 2025,” interim City Manager Larry Jones said.

Council members expressed enthusiasm about the development, with Mayor Wagner reflecting on the positive impact the new courts will have. “It will be about a yearlong project, once we get if off the ground. Sounds like we’re about to get some pickleball,” Wagner remarked, encapsulating the excitement surrounding the upcoming addition to Destin’s recreational facilities.
