Pickleball Courts at Southwick Town Hall: What initially seemed like a delayed project due to budget concerns has now been fast-tracked, with the Parks and Recreation Commission approving the construction of two pickleball courts at Prifti Park. This decision, made during the commission’s Sept. 11 meeting, brings much-anticipated momentum to the project.
“I think we should get it going,” said commission member John Whalley III, expressing a sense of urgency to move forward.
Town Meeting’s Original Plan
Earlier, the Town Meeting had voted to build a total of six pickleball courts. The approved plan includes constructing four courts at Whalley Park and two at the Town Hall property. Despite concerns over costs, the decision has now cleared the way for at least the Town Hall portion of the project to begin promptly.
Three Options Presented
Interim Building and Grounds Director Russ Anderson attended the meeting to provide detailed proposals. Anderson laid out three options for building the courts at Prifti Park, which is located next to the Town Hall. Currently, the space holds two volleyball courts, but the new plans indicate those may soon be replaced by pickleball courts as part of the town’s recreational upgrade.
A Step Toward Enhancing Local Recreation
The commission’s approval marks a critical step forward in expanding recreational offerings in Southwick, with pickleball’s popularity continuing to rise. The next focus will be on refining the details and selecting from the construction options presented by Anderson, ensuring that the courts meet the community’s needs.
