Freebooters Charity Pickleball Tournament: These terms might seem familiar if you’ve encountered pickleball, a sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Originating in the mid-1960s, pickleball is celebrated for its accessibility and enjoyment, making it a rapidly growing sport.
Pirates and Pickleball?
You might wonder if pirates and pickleball have anything in common. Surprisingly, they do. The Westchase Krewe of Freebooters, a Gasparilla Krewe based in Westchase, is venturing into this dynamic sport with a charitable twist. “We have held a very successful charity golf tournament each fall for many years,” explained Krewe Captain Dean Landsman. “This year, we wanted to try something a little different.”
The result? The inaugural Freebooters Charity Pickleball Tournament. Scheduled for Saturday, October 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Tampa Bay Pickleball, located in the Oldsmar Flea Market. With a $75 registration fee, players of all skill levels are invited. The fee covers a tournament t-shirt, paddles (or you can bring your own), food from McDivot’s Sports Bar and Restaurant, and beer courtesy of Yesner Law. Most importantly, it promises a fun experience for a worthy cause.
Mateys Mission of Charity
While the Freebooters are known for their festive spirit, especially during the Gasparilla parade, they are equally committed to community service. The group volunteers at events such as the Great West Chase and supports local organizations like the Westchase Charitable Foundation and Operation Helping Hand.
This tournament aims to support furry friends in need. Proceeds will benefit the Tampa nonprofit St. Francis Society Animal Rescue, which annually rescues thousands of cats and dogs in the community. To learn more or adopt a new pet, visit www.stfrancisrescue.org.
