Varsity Pickleball Debuts in MCPS: Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has officially introduced pickleball as a varsity sport in all 25 county high schools. Tuesday marked a significant milestone as matches were held at six schools, launching the first-ever varsity pickleball season in the district. MCPS is believed to be the first school district in the U.S. to offer the sport at this level, setting a new precedent in high school athletics.
Inclusive Nature of Pickleball Celebrated
“The beauty of pickleball is just how inclusive it is — pick up a paddle, get out there and play,” said Dr. Jeffrey Sullivan, Systemwide Athletics Director for MCPS. The decision to integrate pickleball as a varsity sport was heavily influenced by its accessibility and appeal to a broad range of students.
Offered through the corollary sports program, the initiative is designed to include students with and without disabilities, further reinforcing the inclusive ethos of the game.

Building Confidence Through Play
Richard Montgomery High School’s varsity pickleball coach, Patricia Wayerski, sees the sport’s positive impact on students. “It’s giving them confidence,” she said, highlighting the game’s accessibility. Wayerski is optimistic about the season ahead, believing that pickleball’s simplicity and adaptability will make for an exciting and successful experience for everyone involved.
A Sport for All Generations
Pickleball’s unique appeal extends beyond high school athletes. Robert Campbell, head varsity coach at Sherwood High School, noted the intergenerational aspect of the game. “What’s wonderful about pickleball, a lot of it is cross-generational,” said Campbell.
Reflecting on his own experience, he observed the shift in the sport’s demographics: “When I started playing pickleball a couple of years ago, the average starting age was about 60, so it’s nice to actually see a younger demographic within pickleball.”
