Imperial Valley’s Pickleball Showdown: A Tournament for Heroes

Imperial Valley’s Pickleball Showdown: The newly established Imperial Valley Pickleball Association (IVPA), in collaboration with Imperial Valley Pickleball Ambassador Antonia Mendez, is gearing up for a groundbreaking event. The inaugural Battle of the Badges Tournament is set to take place on November 16, 2024, at Southwest High School in El Centro.

This unique tournament aims to bring together law enforcement officers, firefighters, and both active and retired military personnel in a friendly competition, while also welcoming civilian participants paired with badge-holders.

Registration and Sponsorship Opportunities

Participants can register for the tournament with a fee of $40.00. Those interested in joining the event or contributing as sponsors or raffle prize donors should contact Antonia “Blanca” Mendez at 760-222-6954. The event’s proceeds will benefit the annual “Shop with a Cop” program, which offers underprivileged children a joyful holiday experience while fostering positive interactions with law enforcement.

Growing the Sport Locally

Pickleball, which has emerged as America’s fastest-growing sport in 2024, boasts a staggering 36.5 million players nationwide and over 10,000 playing locations. In the Imperial Valley, the sport is rapidly gaining traction, with approximately 170 local players and more expected as seasonal visitors arrive. Currently, courts are shared at several venues including Conrad Harrison Youth Center, IV Fitness, Southwest High School, The Community Center in El Centro, and the Lion’s Center in Brawley.

Future Plans and Benefits

The IVPA, now a non-profit entity, is actively working to expand local facilities to meet the growing demand. Plans include refurbishing the courts at Meserve Park in Brawley, supported by grants and fundraising efforts. The association emphasizes the numerous benefits of pickleball, such as cardiovascular health, improved balance, and stress management, while also providing social interaction and fun for all ages.

The purpose of this event is to provide a happier Christmas season to these children and to have the children interact with law enforcement officers in a positive setting,” the association said in a release. “It is a day the children and their families will treasure.
