Michael O’Leary, NATO’s president and CEO, expressed his surprise at how frequently pickleball has come up in discussions. “I never thought when I took this job I’d be talking about pickleball courts as much as I am,” he remarked, highlighting a visit to a new B&B Theatres location in Dallas. This venue boasts not only 12 screens but also outdoor spaces featuring a bar, a live performance area, and two pickleball courts. “You don’t even have to watch a movie to rent out the court, but it all helps the big picture,” O’Leary added.

The decision to integrate pickleball courts into theater complexes reflects a broader strategy to diversify the entertainment offerings available to patrons. O’Leary noted that this is part of a larger effort to provide moviegoers with a more expansive experience that goes beyond simply watching films. “This is all part, frankly, of a larger effort on behalf of some of our members to provide moviegoing fans with a more expansive experience, which goes beyond just going to the movies,” he explained.

While the concept of pickleball courts may seem unconventional, it underscores the theater chains’ commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. O’Leary acknowledged that these enhancements are essential for modernizing theaters and attracting audiences in a competitive entertainment landscape. With an uptick in box office revenues, these investments signify a renewed focus on delivering unique experiences that resonate with contemporary audiences.
A Vision for the Future
The eight theater chains involved—AMC Entertainment Inc., Regal Cinemas, Cinemark USA, Inc., Cineplex, Marcus Theatres Corp., B&B Theatres, Harkins Theatres, and Santikos Entertainment—represent about two-thirds of the U.S. box office, with approximately 21,000 screens in total. O’Leary believes that incorporating amenities like pickleball courts not only modernizes theaters but also fosters a sense of community among patrons.
He envisions an inviting atmosphere where visitors want to return, stating, “You’re going to create an environment which is more inviting, which people are going to not just want to go to, but they’re going to want to come back to.”
