PKLYN Opens Doors in Gowanus: Pickleball Hub Set to Transform the Community!

PKLYN Opens Doors in Gowanus:  On September 29, the vibrant neighborhood of Gowanus welcomed a fresh addition to its recreational landscape: PKLYN, a state-of-the-art pickleball facility situated on Fourth Street between Hoyt and Bond Streets. Designed to be a central hub for the growing New York pickleball community, PKLYN invites players of all skill levels to step onto its five meticulously crafted courts and engage in the sport that has captured the hearts of many.

The Rise of Pickleball

In recent years, pickleball has surged in popularity, drawing in enthusiasts from all walks of life—celebrities included, with Taylor Swift among those enjoying the game. Recognizing this meteoric rise, David Friedman, Founder and Managing Partner of PKLYN, was inspired to create a dedicated space for pickleball lovers. The expansive 18,000-square-foot facility reflects a vision born from a pressing need for accessible, high-quality playing areas.

A Thoughtful Design

Crafted by the Ohio-based architecture firm Meyers and Associates, the facility is designed to enhance the pickleball experience and promote player improvement. “PKLYN is a hotspot for the local community,” the team described, featuring several lounges and communal spaces where visitors can unwind with curated cocktails, local beers, and delectable bites from renowned New York purveyors.

The Inspiration Behind PKLYN

Friedman’s journey to founding PKLYN began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when he discovered a tight-knit community of pickleball players at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 2. “I played daily with a regular group, and as our community grew from dozens to thousands, I realized the need for more intentional spaces to engage with the sport,” he recalled. This realization sparked the birth of PKLYN.

Engaging Programming

The facility boasts an exciting lineup of programming, including leagues for all skill levels, round-robin tournaments, and open play nights. Planned events encompass social mixers, themed play days, community activations, and seasonal celebrations. Additionally, PKLYN offers custom packages for private events and structured training opportunities, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Membership provides access to early court bookings, discounts on food and beverages, lesson credits, and member-exclusive happy hours.

Culinary Offerings

PKLYN features a curated food and beverage space capable of accommodating up to 200 guests, partnering with notable vendors like Alidoro, Threes Brewing, Social Hour, Slowfires, and Claudette’s. Friedman envisions expanding these partnerships to include other local food and beverage providers, enhancing the community feel of the facility.

A Diverse Background

Friedman’s professional journey has been anything but ordinary. He previously worked in stadium development for the San Francisco 49ers, managed operations for the John N. Calley Foundation, and practiced real estate law. Now, as an entrepreneur, he brings his unique perspective to PKLYN.

The Team Behind PKLYN

Supporting Friedman in this venture is his wife, Alex Kass, who conceptualized the brand and manages marketing through her agency, AMP Digital Collaborative. Director of Pickleball Operations Duy Tran, an experienced coach, is also integral to the operation, available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and extending to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Court reservations are set at $100 per hour, with on-site rentals for balls and paddles available. Reservations can be made online up to 14 days in advance, making it easy for players to secure their spot on the courts.
